Global investment firm KKR is set to invest more than ₹6,000 crore (over US$600 million) in Gentari Renewable India Pte Ltd, the Indian renewable energy platform of Malaysia’s state-owned energy company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS). The proposed transaction, first reported by The Economic Times on 19 October 2026, is intended to fund the expansion of the company’s renewable power and green hydrogen projects while easing its debt load. If completed, it would rank among the larger platform-level capital commitments in India’s clean energy sector this year.
Deal Structure and Regulatory Status
According to reports citing regulatory filings, KKR has sought approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) through its investment vehicle, Sapphire US Holdco LLC. The capital is not expected to give KKR an immediate equity stake in Gentari Renewable India. Instead, the arrangement is structured to provide growth capital now, with KKR holding an option to acquire a stake at a later stage.
The funds are expected to serve three purposes: financing new renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, reducing debt on the company’s balance sheet, and supporting the acquisition of stakes in Gentari’s existing renewable energy joint ventures in India. The investment follows a process in which Gentari had been seeking a financial partner for its India business, with Standard Chartered Bank engaged as adviser. Neither KKR nor Gentari has issued a formal statement on the transaction so far, and final terms remain subject to CCI clearance.
About Gentari Renewable India
Gentari Renewable India is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gentari International Renewables Pte Ltd, which is in turn owned by Gentari Sdn Bhd, the clean energy company of the PETRONAS group. As described in CCI records, the company delivers clean energy solutions through three core pillars: renewable energy, hydrogen and green mobility.
The platform has grown largely through acquisitions and partnerships. In January 2025, the CCI approved Gentari Renewables India’s acquisition of 21 special purpose vehicles owning wind and solar power plants, including two under-construction projects. These assets formed part of a 1.6 GW portfolio sold by Brookfield Asset Management, which announced in March 2025 that the first phase, covering 1 GW of operating assets, had been completed.
In 2023, Gentari and ReNew agreed key terms for a 50:50 joint venture to develop solar, wind and energy storage assets with a target capacity of 5 GW. This followed Gentari’s earlier investment in a 49% stake in ReNew’s 403 MW Peak Power project.
Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Linkages
The green hydrogen component of the deal connects to Gentari’s partnership with AM Green. In October 2023, Gentari agreed to invest in phases in AM Green Ammonia Holdings (AMG Ammonia), a platform targeting 5 million tonnes per annum of green ammonia production by 2030 using round-the-clock renewable energy. GIC and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority are also partners in the platform.
In December 2024, a Gentari subsidiary signed a binding long-term power purchase agreement to supply 650 MW of round-the-clock, carbon-free power to AMG Ammonia’s upcoming facilities. By then, AMG Ammonia had reached a final investment decision on its first million-tonne green ammonia project at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Fresh capital from KKR could help Gentari meet its share of commitments across such projects, which require large upfront investment in generation and conversion infrastructure.
Policy and Market Context
The proposed investment comes at a time of rapid capacity growth. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s total renewable energy capacity, including large hydro, reached 299.25 GW as on 30 September 2026. Solar accounted for 171.05 GW and wind for 59.20 GW. During the first half of FY 2026-27, the country added 24.56 GW of renewable capacity, of which solar contributed 20.79 GW.
On the hydrogen side, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved with an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore, aims to develop at least 5 million metric tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. This is expected to be supported by about 125 GW of associated renewable energy capacity and over ₹8 lakh crore in total investments. Meeting these targets will require sustained private capital, particularly for the round-the-clock renewable supply on which electrolysis-based production depends.
KKR’s Footprint in Indian Renewables
The proposed transaction adds to KKR’s existing exposure to India’s energy transition. The firm launched Virescent Infrastructure in 2020 as a platform to own and operate renewable assets in India. In 2022, KKR announced a US$450 million investment alongside the Hero Group in Hero Future Energies, and a US$400 million investment in Serentica Renewables, a platform supplying clean power to energy-intensive industries. The firm also holds exposure to transmission and renewable assets through IndiGrid.
The Gentari deal differs from these in structure. By combining growth capital with a future option rather than an upfront equity purchase, it gives Gentari access to funds for expansion and deleveraging, while allowing KKR to assess the platform’s execution before taking ownership.
Outlook
The transaction now awaits the CCI’s decision. Once cleared, the key indicators to watch will be the pace at which Gentari converts its pipeline into commissioned capacity, the completion of stake acquisitions in its joint ventures, and progress on the green ammonia projects linked to AMG Ammonia. The deal also signals continued interest from global investors in Indian platforms that combine utility-scale renewables with green molecules, a segment central to India’s 2030 clean energy and hydrogen targets.
