NTPC Limited has reported that the installed capacity of the NTPC Group stood at 91,506 MW on 30 September 2026, up from 89,108 MW at the end of March 2026. The figures come from the company’s Operational and Financial Snapshot for the second quarter and first half of FY27, which also shows 36,899 MW of capacity under construction across the group, of which 15,998 MW is renewable, along with work on a 5 GWh battery storage programme.

Capacity added in the first half

The group’s installed capacity was 90,904 MW on 30 June 2026 and 91,506 MW on 30 September 2026, compared with 83,893 MW a year earlier on 30 September 2025. Over the first half of FY27 the group added 2,398 MW: 820 MW of thermal capacity and 1,578 MW of renewable capacity. The renewable figure includes 250 MW from the Tehri pumped storage project, which the company counts in its renewable total.

The thermal additions were 800 MW at the Patratu plant of PVUNL and 20 MW at Dadri Stage II. Of the renewable additions other than Tehri, the snapshot lists NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NREL) solar at 495 MW and wind at 191 MW, Ayana solar at 450 MW, NTPC-RE at 176 MW, THDC solar at 11 MW and NSPCL-RE at 5 MW.

Capacity under construction

As on 30 September 2026, the group has 36,899 MW under construction. Coal accounts for 17,320 MW, hydro for 3,581 MW and renewables for 15,998 MW.

The coal pipeline includes 14,120 MW at NTPC standalone projects (including Nabinagar 2,400 MW, Telangana 2,400 MW, Singrauli 1,600 MW and Lara III 1,600 MW), plus a unit of 800 MW at Patratu and the 2,400 MW Meja II project. Hydro projects total 3,581 MW: 811 MW at NTPC standalone (Tapovan Vishnugad 520 MW), 1,644 MW at THDC and 1,126 MW at NEEPCO.

The renewable pipeline is led by NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) and its group companies, with 15,632 MW under construction: 9,379 MW of solar and 6,253 MW of wind. NREL accounts for 8,169 MW of solar and 4,781 MW of wind. Other entries are GVREL solar at 310 MW, INGEL solar at 800 MW and wind at 871 MW, and ONGPL solar at 100 MW and wind at 601 MW. NTPC standalone has a further 66 MW of solar and NEEPCO has 300 MW of solar under construction.

Storage, pumped hydro and nuclear

On battery storage, the company says work is in progress on 5 GWh of battery energy storage capacity allocated to NTPC under the Viability Gap Funding scheme of the Power System Development Fund. The capacity is planned across 15 NTPC thermal power stations and one group company, based on the availability of unrequisitioned surplus power, and commissioning is expected to begin from June 2027. Separately, the NGEL Group is executing 1,620 MWh of battery storage projects, with a further 40 GWh under tendering or planning.

On pumped storage, NTPC says the group has a 16 GW portfolio. Of this, 1 GW at Tehri (THDC) is in commercial operation, and detailed project reports for the other 15 GW are in progress.

In nuclear, the Mahi Banswara Atomic Power Project of 2,800 MW (four units of 700 MW each) is being developed under ASHVINI, a joint venture with NPCIL. A notice inviting tender for the Nuclear Island mega EPC package was issued in July 2026, and excavation work is under way. NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary, has identified 30 potential sites across several states, with site selection studies completed at four locations.

Operational performance

For NTPC standalone, the coal plant load factor was 73.53% in Q2 FY27, against 66.01% in Q2 FY26, and 75.11% for the first half against 70.52% a year earlier. The solar load factor was 24.77% in Q2, up from 22.84%, while the hydro load factor was 95.28% against 104.60%.

The snapshot says dispatch from captive coal mines rose 21% year on year, and that captive mines met 19.86% of the total coal requirement in the first half of FY27. Biomass consumption at group thermal projects increased by 65% year on year.

Investment and dividend

Group capital expenditure, on a cash basis, was Rs 23,932 crore in the first half of FY27, against Rs 23,115 crore in the first half of FY26. Gross group fixed assets were Rs 4,85,444 crore on 30 September 2026, compared with Rs 4,37,142 crore a year earlier. The company also declared a first interim dividend of Rs 3.00 per share for FY 2026-27.

What it means for India’s clean-energy sector

The snapshot shows NTPC’s growth is shifting towards renewables and storage while its coal build-out continues. Renewables make up 15,998 MW of the 36,899 MW under construction, about 43% of the pipeline, and the 5 GWh storage programme is tied to existing thermal stations. The company links the project to the availability of surplus power, with commissioning due to start from June 2027.

The 16 GW pumped storage portfolio and the nuclear plans point to longer-duration firm and low-carbon capacity beyond solar and wind. Most of these projects are at an early stage, and the snapshot does not give completion dates for them. The company says its forward-looking statements are subject to risks and uncertainties.
