Electric vehicle retail sales in India touched an all-time high of about 3.55 lakh units in October 2026, up 44.88% year-on-year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The FADA EV retail October 2026 data, released in New Delhi on 6 November 2026, shows overall EV penetration at roughly 11.5% of vehicle retail, against about 6% a year earlier.
EV retail in October 2026: what FADA reported
FADA said October 2026 was a best-ever October for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. The association described electrification as the clearest bright spot in a month in which total vehicle retail fell year-on-year.
FADA’s President, Sai Giridhar, said demand ran ahead of supply during the month. He cited petrol and diesel prices that remain elevated, driving ranges of electric vehicles that have improved materially, and EV prices that are increasingly at par with comparable petrol and diesel models. According to FADA, buyer pull strengthened to the point where availability, not demand, became the binding constraint.
Share of EVs by segment
FADA’s fuel-wise table gives the EV share of retail in each segment for October 2026, September 2026 and October 2025:
| Segment | Oct 2026 | Sep 2026 | Oct 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-wheelers | 9.65% | 11.58% | 4.66% |
| Three-wheelers | 62.63% | 64.89% | 52.19% |
| Passenger vehicles | 7.30% | 8.45% | 3.55% |
| Commercial vehicles | 4.29% | 4.04% | 1.67% |
Against October 2025, the EV share rose in all four segments. Three-wheelers are now close to 63% electric, and FADA recorded their best-ever October, with 1,41,420 units retailed, up 3.97% year-on-year. In passenger vehicles, the EV share of 7.30% is more than double the 3.55% of a year ago. The table also shows that the EV share of two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles was lower in October 2026 than in September 2026, while the commercial-vehicle share edged up.
In passenger vehicles, FADA noted that alternative fuels once again moved ahead of petrol: petrol and ethanol had a 41.60% share, against 41.83% for CNG, hybrid and EV combined.
The wider retail picture
The EV record came in a month in which total retail was lower than a year ago. FADA reported October 2026 vehicle retail of 31,72,466 units, down 23.80% year-on-year but up 25.05% over September 2026. It called this the second-best October on record and said the year-on-year fall is largely a calendar effect. October 2025 carried both Navratri and Diwali, plus demand released after the GST rate cuts of 22 September 2025, whereas this year Dhanteras and Diwali fall in November.
By segment, FADA reported:
- Two-wheelers: 23,21,419 units, down 28.35% year-on-year and up 29.67% month-on-month.
- Passenger vehicles: 5,07,768 units, down 14.23% year-on-year and up 18.86% month-on-month, the third-best October on record. Channel stock held at around 43 to 45 days.
- Commercial vehicles: 1,15,140 units, up 2.29% year-on-year, a best-ever October.
- Three-wheelers: 1,41,420 units, up 3.97% year-on-year.
- Tractors: 79,285 units, up 3.10%, and wheeled construction equipment: 7,434 units, up 22.07%.
November outlook from dealers
In FADA’s sentiment survey for November 2026, 51.65% of dealers expect growth, 34.71% expect flat sales and 13.64% expect a decline. FADA said Dhanteras on 6 November and Diwali on 8 November fall within the month, so the biggest retail wave is still ahead. Over the next three months, from November 2026 to January 2027, 50.41% of dealers expect growth.
What it means for India’s clean-energy sector
A record month for EV retail, in a month when overall vehicle retail fell, indicates that electric vehicles are taking a growing share of the market. For the power sector, higher EV volumes mean growing charging demand, which makes public and home charging infrastructure and grid planning more relevant. FADA’s remark that supply, not demand, limited sales points to the importance of vehicle and battery availability in the coming festive months.
The month-on-month dip in EV share for two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles, visible in FADA’s own table, is a reminder that one month’s data should be read with care. The year-on-year picture, with EV penetration up from about 6% to about 11.5%, is the clearer trend in this release.
