India’s domestic battery energy storage manufacturing ecosystem has gained another important building block. Godawari New Energy Private Limited (GNEPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Godawari Power & Ispat Limited (GPIL), has received environmental clearance for the construction of an industrial building at the AURIC Bidkin Industrial Area in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district, Maharashtra. The facility will house the company’s planned 20 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing plant, marking a key regulatory milestone in the steel and power group’s diversification into clean energy infrastructure.
Clearance Details
The clearance was granted following the 299th meeting of the State Expert Appraisal Committee-3 (SEAC-3), Maharashtra. GNEPL received the clearance on 5 October 2026, and GPIL formally disclosed it to the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and BSE Limited on 6 October 2026 under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
- Project proponent: Godawari New Energy Private Limited (wholly owned subsidiary of GPIL)
- Approval: Environmental clearance for construction of an industrial building
- Appraising body: SEAC-3, Maharashtra (299th meeting)
- Location: AURIC Bidkin Industrial Area, District Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra
- Planned capacity: 20 GWh BESS manufacturing
Under India’s Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006, large building and construction projects require prior environmental clearance before work can begin on site. With this approval in place, GNEPL can move ahead with structural construction of the plant. The disclosure itself did not specify a construction timeline or project cost.
How the Project Has Evolved
GPIL’s storage plans have grown steadily in scale. In its November 2025 earnings call, filed with the stock exchanges, the company stated that GNEPL planned to set up a 10 GW battery energy storage project in Maharashtra, to be funded through 60 percent debt with the balance coming from GPIL’s internal accruals as equity contribution.
By May 2026, the company’s earnings call described the project as a 20 GW BESS facility, with soil testing completed at the site. GPIL also reported supply agreements with EVE Power for Grade-1 628 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and with Shanghai Shenyi Roche Energy for BESS components, securing the core of its supply chain ahead of construction.
CRISIL Ratings, in its May 2026 rating rationale for GPIL, noted that the company plans to manufacture 20 GWh of BESS in phase 1 and is venturing into BESS assembly manufacturing. The agency placed this within a broader capital expenditure plan of ₹3,500–4,000 crore across fiscals 2027 and 2028, which also covers iron ore beneficiation expansion, a cold rolled mill complex and captive solar capacity.
Investment and Execution Progress
The group is also building capabilities around the BESS business. In its regulatory filings, GPIL has kept investors updated on further equity investment in GNEPL to fund the storage project, and on 1 October 2026 it incorporated a new wholly owned subsidiary, Godawari Energy Solutions Private Limited, in Maharashtra to undertake engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance for battery storage and renewable energy projects. Together, the two subsidiaries position the group to cover both equipment manufacturing and project execution.
The AURIC location carries strategic value. AURIC Bidkin is a greenfield industrial area developed under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme and managed by Maharashtra Industrial Township Limited (MITL), and it was dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister in September 2024. GPIL has separately disclosed to the stock exchanges that MITL offered it an industrial plot of about 31.45 acres in AURIC Bidkin through an offer letter dated 22 September 2026 for its cold rolling mill project, indicating that the region is emerging as a key manufacturing base for the group.
Why This Matters for India’s Storage Sector
Battery storage is becoming essential to India’s energy transition. As solar and wind capacity expands, the grid requires flexible resources that can absorb surplus daytime generation and release it during evening peaks. Central agencies such as SECI and NTPC, along with state utilities, are tendering standalone and hybrid storage projects at an accelerating pace, supported by the government’s Viability Gap Funding scheme for BESS.
This growing project pipeline has created strong demand for domestically manufactured storage systems. Large-scale facilities such as GNEPL’s can reduce reliance on imported containerised BESS units, shorten delivery timelines for developers and support the government’s emphasis on self-reliance in clean energy manufacturing. For GPIL, which is traditionally known for sponge iron, steel and ferroalloys, the venture represents a significant strategic shift toward new-age energy infrastructure.
Road Ahead
The environmental clearance removes a major regulatory hurdle, but execution remains the key test. CRISIL has highlighted risks from potential delays in commissioning the single-line 20 GWh unit and from the entry of large conglomerates into BESS manufacturing, which could pressure profitability. The next milestones to watch include the start of on-site construction, installation of the assembly line and the consent to operate from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board.
If delivered on schedule, the AURIC Bidkin facility would rank among the larger BESS manufacturing plants in India and would contribute meaningfully to the domestic supply chain needed to meet the country’s rapidly rising energy storage requirements. It would also demonstrate how established industrial groups with strong balance sheets and manufacturing experience can scale quickly into the storage value chain, a trend likely to shape competition in the Indian BESS market over the coming years.
