India’s rooftop solar market has recorded another significant milestone. Tata Power Solaroof, the rooftop solar division of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), has crossed a cumulative installed capacity of 5.67 GWp across about 575,000 rooftop installations nationwide. The company announced the achievement on 6 October 2026 alongside its operational results for the July–September quarter (Q2 FY27), which included its highest-ever quarterly installation count.

Record Quarterly Performance

In Q2 FY27, Tata Power Solaroof completed 88,397 rooftop solar installations, a 33 percent increase over the 66,447 installations recorded in Q2 FY26. These systems added 426 MWp of capacity during the quarter, up 15 percent from 369 MWp in the same period last year.

The gap between installation growth and capacity growth is notable. Installations grew more than twice as fast as capacity, which indicates that a larger share of new systems are small residential units rather than large commercial and industrial (C&I) rooftops. This shift is consistent with the rapid expansion of household solar adoption under the government’s flagship rooftop programme.

First-Half FY27 Highlights

For the first six months of FY27 (April–September 2026), the company added more than 168,530 installations, a 50 percent year-on-year rise from 112,729 installations in H1 FY26. Capacity installed during this period reached 801 MWp, a 25 percent increase over the 639 MWp added in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

  • Q2 FY27 installations: 88,397 (up 33% YoY)
  • Q2 FY27 capacity added: 426 MWp (up 15% YoY)
  • H1 FY27 installations: 168,530+ (up 50% YoY)
  • H1 FY27 capacity added: 801 MWp (up 25% YoY)
  • Cumulative portfolio: ~575,000 installations; 5.67 GWp+

State-Wise Performance

Uttar Pradesh was the largest contributor in H1 FY27, with 44,014 installations totalling around 172 MWp. Maharashtra followed with 22,165 installations of close to 100 MWp, while Rajasthan recorded 21,275 installations adding 99 MWp. Kerala contributed 15,477 installations with about 65 MWp.

On a cumulative basis, Uttar Pradesh leads in installation count with 116,254 systems and 528 MWp. Maharashtra holds the largest cumulative capacity at 1,041 MWp across 73,578 installations, reflecting a higher share of larger C&I systems in that state. Kerala has 69,734 installations totalling more than 310 MWp, and Rajasthan has 44,798 installations with 390 MWp. The strong showing of Uttar Pradesh, a market that was comparatively small for rooftop solar only a few years ago, highlights how household demand is spreading beyond the traditional solar-leading states.

Rapid Scale-Up Over the Past Year

The pace of growth becomes clearer when compared with the company’s earlier disclosures. In January 2026, TPREL reported more than 300,000 cumulative rooftop installations and over 4 GWp of installed capacity, after adding 1 GWp in the first nine months of FY26. Within roughly nine months, the installation base has nearly doubled and cumulative capacity has grown by more than 1.6 GWp.

The business is also contributing meaningfully to Tata Power’s financial performance. In its Q1 FY27 results released in July 2026, Tata Power reported that rooftop solar profit after tax had grown to ₹145 crore, about 1.7 times the level of the previous year. The company has also expanded its rooftop offering to include complete solar-plus-battery-storage solutions, positioning itself for the next phase of distributed energy adoption.

Role of PM Surya Ghar and Ghar Ghar Solar

The company links its growth to the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the central government scheme that provides financial assistance to households installing rooftop solar systems. Tata Power’s “Ghar Ghar Solar” campaign complements the scheme by building awareness and encouraging adoption at the household level.

Tata Power Solaroof offers an end-to-end package that includes high-performance modules with a 25-year performance warranty, financing options, insurance cover and after-sales service. Its delivery network has grown to more than 740 channel partners across India. The company states that CRISIL has recognised it as India’s leading rooftop solar company for 12 consecutive years.

Manufacturing Backbone

TPREL’s rooftop business is supported by its own manufacturing base. The company operates a solar cell and module plant in Bengaluru with 530 MW of cell and 682 MW of module capacity, along with a 4.3 GW cell and module facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, which it describes as the country’s largest single-location plant of its kind. This vertical integration gives the company greater control over supply and quality, and aligns with the domestic content norms that apply to subsidised residential rooftop installations.

Why This Milestone Matters

Rooftop solar is central to India’s distributed generation strategy. It reduces electricity bills for households and businesses, eases daytime demand on distribution networks and cuts transmission losses by generating power where it is consumed. As installations accelerate, the sector is also creating demand for local installers, financiers and service providers across smaller cities and towns.

Tata Power Solaroof’s results show that residential rooftop solar is moving from a niche product to a mass-market segment. With household adoption gathering pace under PM Surya Ghar and solar-plus-storage solutions entering the mainstream, the next phase of growth is likely to depend on financing access, discom approval timelines and the readiness of distribution networks to integrate a large volume of small, distributed systems.
