Power systems and renewable energy EPC company Hartek Power has secured an 80 MW turnkey solar engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) order worth approximately ₹200 crore from a leading Indian steel manufacturer. Announced on 22 October 2026, the project will be developed in Uttar Pradesh to meet the manufacturer’s captive power requirements and increase the share of renewable energy in its industrial operations. Hartek expects to complete the project by 31 December 2026.
Key Details of the Order
The 80 MW solar plant is being developed at a location separate from the customer’s manufacturing facility and will supply electricity for the steelmaker’s captive consumption. Hartek has not disclosed the name of the steel manufacturer, the district where the plant will be built, the DC capacity of the project or the power transmission arrangement to the customer’s facility.
With the award announced in late October and completion targeted by the end of the year, the contract sets a tight execution window of a little over two months for the full EPC scope.
Scope of Work
Under the turnkey contract, Hartek Power will be responsible for the complete EPC scope, covering engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning. The mandate also includes the supply of key project equipment, namely solar modules, inverters, power transformers and inverter duty transformers (IDTs). This places design, equipment sourcing, site execution and grid-ready commissioning with a single contractor, from the engineering stage through to final handover. For the customer, a single point of responsibility simplifies coordination across design, supply and site work, which matters given the compressed schedule.
Management Comment
Simarpreet Singh, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Hartek Group, said that the growing adoption of renewable energy by energy-intensive industries reflects a broader shift towards cleaner and more efficient power solutions. He added that Hartek’s commercial and industrial (C&I) renewable energy business is working with large industrial customers across India to support their decarbonisation and net-zero plans.
Singh said the 80 MW award strengthens the company’s position in delivering integrated solar EPC solutions for industrial customers, and that its focus remains on combining engineering expertise, reliable equipment supply and execution capability to help industries move towards a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
Policy Backdrop in Uttar Pradesh
The project comes under Uttar Pradesh’s Solar Energy Policy 2022, which sets a target of 22,000 MW of solar power projects by 2026-27. The policy specifically provides for the development of solar projects for captive consumption and for sale of power to third parties other than Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd, both intra-state and inter-state. The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) is the nodal agency for its implementation.
At the national level, the Ministry of Power notified the Electricity (Amendment) Rules, 2026 on 13 March 2026, revising the provisions on captive generating plants under Rule 3 of the Electricity Rules, 2005. Among other changes, the amended rules treat a company and its subsidiaries as a single captive user. The amendments are aimed at strengthening the captive power framework and improving industrial competitiveness, which is directly relevant to large industrial users such as steel manufacturers setting up dedicated renewable capacity.
About Hartek Group
Founded in 1991, Hartek Group operates across three business verticals: Power Systems, Renewable Energy and Power Distribution Products. The group states that it has connected more than 10 GW of solar power to the national grid, contributing to a reduction of about 300 million tonnes of carbon emissions, and has installed over 200 MW of rooftop solar capacity across India. Hartek Power, its power systems and renewables infrastructure arm, executes utility-scale and industrial solar projects along with associated electrical infrastructure such as EHV and HV substations. The group is led by Chairman and Managing Director Hartek Singh, with Simarpreet Singh as Executive Director and CEO.
Hartek’s 2026 Order Pipeline
The Uttar Pradesh order adds to a series of contracts announced by Hartek during 2026:
- January 2026: an EPC contract worth approximately ₹353.77 crore for a 280 MW AC (410 MWp DC) solar plant integrated with an 80 MW/320 MWh battery energy storage system at Challakere, Karnataka.
- February 2026: cumulative power systems orders worth ₹735 crore across utility, independent power producer and industrial segments, covering substation and transmission projects from 66 kV to 765 kV.
- March 2026: commissioning of Punjab’s first agrivoltaic solar open access project, at Kapurthala, for an IT company.
- July 2026: an EPC order for a 400 MWdc (299.2 MWac) solar project in Rajasthan, comprising two 200 MW plants and a 220 kV solar pooling substation.
With the latest award, Hartek’s 2026 order book now spans utility-scale solar, solar-plus-storage, transmission infrastructure and captive industrial solar.
Outlook
Steel is among the most electricity-intensive manufacturing sectors, and dedicated captive solar capacity offers producers a way to secure clean power for their operations over the long term. For Hartek, the order deepens its presence in India’s C&I renewable energy segment alongside its utility-scale business. The next milestone will be commissioning of the 80 MW plant against the 31 December 2026 deadline; further details, including the customer’s identity and project location, are yet to be announced.
